1、什麼是春節：

春節是指漢字文化圈傳統上的農曆新年，俗稱“年節”，傳統名稱為新年、大年、新歲，但口頭上又稱度歲、慶新歲、過年。[1] 中國人過春節已有4000多年的歷史。在現代，人們把春節定於農曆正月初一，但一般至少要到正月十五（上元節）新年才算結束，在民間，傳統意義上的春節是指從臘月的臘祭或臘月二十三或二十四的祭灶，一直到正月十九。

在春節期間，中國的漢族和一些少數民族都要舉行各種慶祝活動。這些活動均以祭祀祖神、祭奠祖先、除舊佈新、迎禧接福、祈求豐年為主要內容，形式豐富多彩，帶有濃郁的各民族特色。受到中華文化的影響，屬於漢字文化圈的一些國家和民族也有慶祝春節的習俗。人們在春節這一天都儘可能地回到家裏和親人團聚，表達對未來一年的熱切期盼和對新一年生活的美好祝福。

2、春節英文的由來：

The Chinese New Year is now popularly known as the Spring Festival because it starts from the Begining of Spring (the first of the twenty-four terms in coodination with the changes of Nature). Its origin is too old to be traced. Several explanations are hanging around. All agree, however, that the word Nian, which in modern Chinese solely means "year", was originally the name of a monster beast that started to prey on people the night before the beginning of a new year.

One legend goes that the beast Nian had a very big mouth that would swallow a great many people with one bite. People were very scared. One day, an old man came to their rescue, offering to subdue Nian. To Nian he said, "I hear say that you are very capable, but can you swallow the other beasts of prey on earth instead of people who are by no means of your worthy opponents?" So, it did swallow many of the beasts of prey on earth that also harrassed people and their domestic animals from time to time.
