"Halloween"一詞的產生：

很多民族都在萬聖節前夜有慶典聚會，這又被叫做“All Hallow E'en”、“The Eve of All Hallows”、“Hallow e'en”，或者“The eve of All Saintas'Day”。最終約定俗成演變成了“Halloween”，中文意譯成了萬聖節之夜。

萬聖節的一個有趣內容是“Trick or treat”，這習俗卻並非源自愛爾蘭，而是始於公元九世紀的歐洲基督教會。那時的11月2日，被基督徒們稱為 “ALL SOULS DAY”（萬靈之日）。在這一天，信徒們跋涉於僻壤鄉間，挨村挨户乞討用麪粉及葡萄乾製成的“靈魂之餅”。據説捐贈糕餅的人家都相信教會僧人的祈禱，期待由此得到上帝的佑護，讓死去的親人早日進入天堂。這種挨家乞討的傳統傳至當今竟演變成了孩子們提着南瓜燈籠挨家討糖吃的遊戲。見面時，打扮成鬼精靈模樣的孩子們千篇一律地都要發出“不請吃就搗亂”的威脅，而主人自然不敢怠慢，連聲説“請吃！請吃！”同時把糖果放進孩子們隨身攜帶的大口袋裏。

另外還有南瓜雕空當燈籠的故事。這又是源於古代愛爾蘭。故事是説一個名叫 JACK 的人，是個醉漢且愛惡作劇。一天 JACK 把惡魔騙上了樹，隨即在樹樁上刻了個十字，恐嚇惡魔令他不敢下來，然後 JACK 就與惡魔約法三章，讓惡魔答應施法讓 JACK 永遠不會犯罪為條件讓他下樹。 JACK 死後，其靈魂卻既不能上天又不能下地獄，於是他的亡靈只好靠一根小蠟燭照着指引他在天地之間倘佯。

在古老的愛爾蘭傳説裏，這根小蠟燭是在一根挖空的蘿蔔裏放着，稱作“JACK LANTERNS”，而古老的蘿蔔燈演變到今天，則是南瓜做的 Jack-O-Lantern 了。據説愛爾蘭人到了美國不久，即發現南瓜不論從來源和雕刻來説都比蘿蔔勝一籌，於是南瓜就成了萬聖節的寵物。

Jack then made him promise that, in exchange for letting him out of the tree, the Devil would never tempt him to sin again. He reluctantly agreed, but was able to exact his revenge upon Jack's death. Because of his mischievous ways in life, Jack was barred from entering heaven and because of his earlier trick, he was also barred from hell. So he was doomed to wander the earth until the end of time, with only a single ember（灰燼， 餘燼） （carried in a hollowed out turnip.[植]蕪箐， 蕪箐甘藍） to warm him and light his way.

In Ireland, they originally also used turnips for their "Jack Lanterns", but upon arriving in the new world, they discovered that pumpkins were abundant and easier to carve out.
